Intimacy is the key to connection, and the connection is the key to having a fulfilling and passionate sex life. This is especially true when in a long-term relationship or a marriage. We are going to look at how you can work to maintain intimacy with your partner and what achieving a greater level of intimacy can and will do for your relationship.

The Importance of Intimacy

Intimacy is very important between two people when part of a couple, especially in the bedroom. Intimacy is what brings you close and keeps you close. Firstly, we will look at what intimacy means and the different types of intimacy that exist.

What Is Intimacy

There are different types of intimacy and here I will outline them for you before digging deeper into the intimacy that exists between couples. Intimacy, in a general sense, is defined as mutual openness and vulnerability between two people. There are different ways in which you can give and receive openness and vulnerability in a relationship. Intimacy does not have to include a sexual relationship (though it can); therefore, it is not only reserved for romantic relationships. Intimacy can also be present in other types of close relationships like friendships or family relationships. Below, I will outline the different forms of intimacy.

Emotional

Emotional intimacy is the ability to express oneself in a mature and open manner, leading to a deep emotional connection between people. Saying things like “I love you” or “you are very important to me” are examples of this. It is also the ability to respond in a mature and open way when someone expresses themselves to you by saying things like “I’m sorry” or “I love you too.” This type of open and vulnerable dialogue leads to an emotional connection. In order for a deep emotional connection to form, there must be a mutual willingness to be vulnerable and open with one’s deeper thoughts and feelings. This is where this type of emotional intimacy comes from.

Intellectual

Intellectual intimacy is a kind of intimacy that involves discussing and sharing thoughts and opinions on intellectual matters, from which they gain fulfillment and feelings of closeness with the other person. For example, if you are discussing politics with someone who you deem to be an intellectual equal, you may find that you feel closeness with them as you share your thoughts and opinions and connect on an intellectual level. Many people find intellect and brains to be sexy in a partner!

Shared Interests and Activities

This form of intimacy is less well-known, but it is also considered a form of intimacy. When you share activities with another person that you both enjoy and are passionate about, this creates a sense of connection. For example, when you cook together or travel together. These shared experiences give you memories to share, and this leads to bonding and intimacy (openness and vulnerability). This type of connection is usually present in friendships, in familial relationships, and more importantly, in romantic relationships. Being able to share interests and activities leads to a closeness that can be defined as intimacy.
